In Mālavikāgnimitram, Kālidāsa, through the sūtradhāra, cautions that neither age nor novelty determines literary merit, that each work must be judged on its own terms.
The New Delhi Review of Books (NDRB) takes that principle as its starting point. We grew out of the Indic Perspectives Programme, founded in 2025, as a closed initiative devoted to serious reading and criticism. Ours is a review in the older tradition of the critical essay, where a book is an occasion for thought rather than a subject for summary. We publish four to six times a year.
Each review published with us finds itself through three tests. First, it must identify the book’s central argument, stripped of promotion and self-description. Second, it must then examine its premises, evidence, and omissions. Finally, it must place the work within the wider intellectual and political life in India. Such readers and writers are the beginnings of an original public culture. Over time, the New Delhi Review of Books aims to become a meeting place for those who may shape India’s institutions and civic life.
